Carver Select Board Unanimously Approves $67,000 Grant for South Carver Church Painting

CARVER — September 30, 2025 — Carver Select Board unanimously approved a $67,000 Community Preservation Act grant for the South Carver Union Society, clearing the way to pay a contractor who had been waiting more than three weeks for payment after completing exterior painting on the Union Meeting House in South Carver. Town meeting had authorized the funds on April 8, 2025 under Article 9, drawn from the Community Preservation Historic Preservation Reserve Fund, for exterior trim repair and repainting of the historic 1909 building at 29 South Main Street. Payment stalled after a tangle of three overlapping organizational names — the original 1909 deed entity, the CPC application name, and a newly reincorporated "South Carver Union Society, Inc." — left town counsel unable to finalize the required grant agreement and historic preservation restriction. Town Counsel Attorney Greg Corbo, joining the meeting by phone, told the board the deed restriction runs in perpetuity with the land and is required by CPA law for any historic preservation disbursement, noting a prior grant to the same property apparently skipped the step. Society president Robert Andrews confirmed the new corporate name has been filed at the Plymouth Registry of Deeds; the check is expected to issue on the town warrant cycle around October 9.
