Carver School Committee Approves Handbooks, Calendar Revision, and Policy Updates

Email Text Facebook X

CARVER -- June 8, 2026, Carver School Committee approves handbooks, a corrected school calendar, and a tobacco and marijuana policy update at its June 8 meeting. The committee unanimously approved revised student handbooks for both Carver Elementary School and Carver Middle High School, with the elementary handbook reorganizing its prohibited-items section into distinct categories for weapons, drugs, and toys, and the middle and high school handbook adding a formal definition of "wandering", leaving class without permission for more than 10 minutes. Both handbooks carry placeholder cell phone language pending potential state legislation imposing a bell-to-bell ban; Superintendent Ron Neif said revisions may be required as early as August. The committee also corrected an oversight in the 2026-2027 calendar, moving a teacher professional development day to November 4, a federal election day, and rescheduling parent-teacher conference half days. Director of Curriculum and Instruction John Mills presented spring NWEA data showing Carver Elementary grades 2-5 students reaching the 72nd percentile nationally in math achievement and the 76th percentile for math growth. The committee voted to accept private scholarship contributions totaling $18,000 and approved a second reading of Policy ADC adding recreational marijuana to the district's existing tobacco prohibition.
