Carver School Committee Approves Banner Redesign, Nine Policies at October Session

CARVER — October 20, 2025 — Carver School Committee approves athletic banner redesign and nine policy updates at October 20 meeting. The committee voted unanimously to move forward with a $17,466 redesign of championship banners at Carver Middle High School, converting individual statistical milestones such as 1,000-point scorers to wall plaques near the nurse's office while keeping individual state championship titles as banners. Superintendent Scott Neaf and Assistant Superintendent John Griffin presented MCAS and accountability data showing the district rated "substantial progress towards meeting targets" after meeting 53 percent of state performance goals, but flagged that Carver Middle High School received a "school requiring assistance or intervention" designation solely because eighth-grade opt-outs pushed building-level MCAS participation below the required 95 percent threshold. Chronic absenteeism rose to 14 percent at the elementary school and 17 percent at the middle high school, reversing prior-year gains; Griffin reported that 80 percent of chronically absent students scored "Not Meeting" or "Partially Meeting" on MCAS. The committee also accepted a $13,500 Innovations Pathways Implementation and Support Grant from DESE, approved FY26 warrants and first-quarter budget transfers, and received a first draft of the FY27-FY36 capital plan totaling $823,175. District enrollment stands at 1,462 students as of October 1, down 42 from the prior year, with a kindergarten class of just 91 students driving concern about a longer-term demographic decline.
